From: To: "Goodwin Joanna" Cc: Subject: Re XML authoring Date: 2003-04-23, 22:41 Dear Ms. Joanna Goodwin I have been worked in ITSIG XML Project to develop XML DTD for ISO standards. The developed XML DTD is included in the ISO/IEC TR 9573-11 2nd edition, Structure Description and Style Specifications for Standards Document Interchange. The DTR 9573-11 2nd edition was circulated within JTC1 as JTC1 N6818 and approved in Nov. 2002 as shown in JTC1 N6964. Its final text for publication has been sent to ITTF via JTC1. In this sense it could be a standard DTD. Considering feasible conversion of existing SGML instances into XML instances, the XML DTD was developed being based on the ITSIG exchange DTD. The TR 9573-11 2nd edition contains - SGML DTD, and - XML DTD Both DTDs support database-oriented profile (for ISONET) and document-oriented profile. In order to satisfy the requirements for authoring and printing, the TR 9573-11 2nd edition includes some style specifications conforming to ISO/IEC directives. By applying the style specification to an appropriate formatter, standards described with the XML DTD can easily be rendered for printing, displaying or creating PDF-files. The style specifications are described by - DSSSL (ISO/IEC 10179) for strictly ISO/IEC-directive-conformed rendering - XSL for light-weight rendering - XSLT for preview by ordinary HTML browsers By using an XML editor working with the formatter, the authoring of ISO standards in the XML DTD can be carried out in WYSIWYG-like operations. I'm planning to make a demonstration of the actual authoring by some XML editors (free software and proprietary software) working with a formatter, in the meeting in Geneva on 30 April. During or after the meeting your proposed discussion will be welcomed. NOTE: You can see the TR 9573-11 2nd edition and get the DTDs and style specifications at the following web for the editing group: http://www.y-adagio.com/public/standards/iso_tr_9573-11rev/9573-11rev.html As a conclusion I would like to emphasize that authoring and printing issues should be discussed with formatting as well as DTD. ISO/IEC TR 9573-11 2nd edition defines the both issues and already approved, at least within JTC1, for publication. I believe, therefore, the 1st step for imposing XML for authoring, printing and interchanging standards could be the use of the TR 9573-11 2nd edition. Further requirements clarified in the actual use of the DTD and style specifications should be satisfied in the amendments to TR 9573-11 to be developed.
